Hey there :)
Sorry for posting so late today, but I have been powernapping studying my ass off all evening.
Today I wanted to share my thoughts on a little thing called poetry slam :).
I’ve been to three poetry slam events in my life, one of which occured today. I went to see a competition with my friend and it was so much fun. I’m usually not the poetry type, but somehow, poetry slam have gotten to me.
If you don’t know, poetry slam is basically people writing their own poetry and then reading it out loud, not only with their voice, but also their bodies and hands. So much depends on how you choose to perform your poem, because it will affect how the audience perceive your words.
Somehow, I just understand a poem so much better when the author reads it out loud in their own way. The whole experience gets much more powerful and catching than when I’m just reading it on a paper.
Sadly, I don’t have the talent to write my own poems, nor the bravery to walk up on a stage and express my thoughts myself. It must be a really awesome feeling to mesmerize people with your own words. Maybe in the future…
Poetry slam is such a beautiful and personal thing, and I really hope I will get the opportunity to attend more of these events in the future. It’s not that big in Sweden yet, but I think it’s growing more and more :).
Is poetry slam a big thing where you live? Please comment and let me know :)
If you’re interested in poetry slam, you should read…
Slammed, by Colleen Hoover
It’s a really awesome book, and it’s what opened up my eyes to poetry slam. If you haven’t read it, you should ;).
You can find my “kind of review” of it here, and to give you a sneak peak, here’s part of a poem from the book :)
Life wants you to fight it
Learn how to make it your own.
it wants you to grab and axe and hack through the wood.
It wants you to get a sledgehammer and break through concrete.
It wants you to grab a torch and burn through the metal and steel until you can reach through and grab it.
